“Summer Window almost painted itself. I had prepared the warm ground colour previously. I was painting another subject on a different canvas when I became aware of the cool lilac colour of the shadow side of the block of flats in the distance. The colour seemed very pure and beautiful. This became the starting point of the composition, with the trees and the window edge framing the view. It all happened pretty quickly.”
