“The heavy head of the hydrangea leans over the table top, casting a shadow as it does so. The ribbon was a later addition. The fact that part of its shadow is obscured by the flowers makes it appear to be rearing up. This was entirely accidental but I think adds to the mysterious quality of the painting.”
