Tom Coates

Tom Coates (1941-2023) was an award-winning figurative painter in the spontaneous English tradition. Coates, a committed plein-air artist, travelled widely and captured diverse scenes from Venice to Jaipur.

Born in Birmingham, Coates began his art training at the Bournville College of Art. In 1961, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools, where he was mentored by Sir Henry Rushbury, the then Keeper. Influences include Peter Greenham, Charles Mahoney and John Ward.

Coates held numerous memberships, including the New English Art Club (of which he is a former President), the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Royal Watercolour Society, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and the Royal Society of British Artists.
