Description

Dunlop was not concerned with extraneous detail or a rigid scientific framework for painting. Instead, he channelled the emotional and instinctive – painting en plein air in all weather conditions. In this large landscape, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1966, Dunlop captures the North African city of Tangier with rhythmic brushstrokes and warm pastel colours.

I myself have always found it impossible to paint in any other way than directly in touch with Nature, and take even the largest of canvases out to the “site” and work, under all conditions of weather, in the open.
