The Spetses painting, whilst different in tone to the Sussex paintings that he did in the same period, does have similar brushwork. I think, though, that painting was always for him a way of experiencing the world and his habit every summer was to sit or stand with a sketching box round his neck, starting with a cardboard viewfinder to find the image; this was the way of painting he’d learned from Maurice Feild at school and carried on all his life.

Description

Sir Lawrence Gowing captures the intense heat and light on the Greek island of Spetses. It was one of only a few paintings completed during a family holiday to the island in 1989 on Gowing’s only visit to Greece. A vibrant picture and an excellent example of the artist’s later work.
