Description

Greenham spent months, often years, working on portraits – requiring an average of 10-12 sittings. Over time, the form was built up with layers of paint towards a precise statement. His patient approach and sensitive style are visible in this portrait of the writer Muriel Emanuel.

I love to paint people... I’ve only had one sitter I failed to fall in love with.
— Peter Greenham
Peter Greenham exemplified the persistence and vitality of a significant and quieter strain in British painting that made no radical break with tradition.
