Description

This 1987 painting, exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, is a fine example of the artist’s more vibrant work. The building is likely to be the rear view of Oxenbridge Farm, opposite Fred Cuming’s home in Iden, East Sussex. The artist will have walked across the field, made preparatory sketches and finished the painting in his studio. During the late 1920s, Paul Nash rented a cottage at Oxenbridge Farm. The back of the building, photographed in 1930, can be viewed here.

The finest landscape painter of his generation.
